Have I mentioned before just how much I love cheese? Well I do! And one of my favourites has to be halloumi! It is so easy to add into salads, bakes, burgers wraps and much more! Due to its' high melting point, halloumi is It is a very handy cheese to cook with and it usually comes in a pre-flavoured brine making it extra tasty! One of my favourite ways to eat halloumi is as fries dipped in sweet-chilli sauce (which I use as my dipping sauce in this recipe). However, I often find that when fried the halloumi can be too greasy, so I prefer to make and eat them baked!
This recipe is extremely easy and makes for the perfect starter, snack or side!
Serves : 1-2 (makes roughly 8 sticks) | Total Time: 40 minutes | Easy
Ingredients:
150 grams Halloumi
1/3 cup (45g approx) Plain flour
1/3 cup (40g approx) Panko bread crumbs
1 egg
Paprika
Pepper
Chives
Sweet Chilli Sauce (optional - can replace with your preferred dipping sauce or eat plain)
Method:
Preheat the oven to 180°C/ gas mark 5. Place some greaseproof paper onto a baking tray .(You can use tinfoil but beware the halloumi may stick to this)
Slice the halloumi block into sticks and sprinkle some paprika and pepper over them
Prepare 2 bowls; one with flour and the other with the eggs beaten. Prepare a plate with the breadcrumbs.
Take a halloumi stick and coat it with the flour. Shake off any excess and then transfer it to the egg bowl. Once coated with egg, place the halloumi stick into the breadcrumbs. Make sure the bread crumbs cover all sides of the halloumi before placing onto the pre-prepared baking tray.
Continue to follow these step above until all the halloumi sticks have been coated in the flour, egg and breadcrumb. (To make these steps less messy you can always use a 'dry hand' which you only use to place the halloumi sticks into the flour with and a 'wet hand' which you use to coat the halloumi in egg and breadcrumbs).
Bake for 25 minutes or until the outside is golden.
When cooked, place into a serving bowl and sprinkle over the chives (and extra pepper if desired). Serve with a dipping sauce such as sweet chilli sauce or salsa.
These are best eaten hot and fresh out of the oven! You can also prepare them ahead of time and either store in the fridge or freezer until ready to eat. You will need to cook them in the oven for slightly longer if frozen.
